Spiti Valley

This Spiti Valley travel guide 2026 covers everything you need before you go. Spiti is a cold desert tucked into the Trans-Himalayan belt of Himachal Pradesh, sitting at an average altitude of 3,800 metres. Serenade Travels has been running Spiti Valley trips from Delhi for years — here is the short version, condensed to what actually matters.

Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley

The best time to visit Spiti Valley is June to September, when both the Shimla and Manali routes are open together and Chandratal Lake is accessible. May and October offer fewer crowds but a shorter window on one route only. Winter (November–March) brings frozen waterfalls and near-empty villages on the Shimla side, and Serenade Travels runs dedicated Winter Spiti batches for exactly this season.

The Two Routes: Shimla & Manali

Shimla to Kaza covers roughly 420 km over two days through Kinnaur, via Kalpa, Nako, and Tabo — no high passes, open almost year-round, and the safer entry for first-timers. Manali to Kaza is shorter at about 200 km but crosses Rohtang La and Kunzum La, open only June to October, and is the route for a detour to Chandratal Lake camping. Most travelers do the full circuit — entering from one side, exiting the other — which is how every Serenade Travels package is built.

Top 6 Places to See

  • Key Monastery Spiti — the valley's largest and most iconic gompa, 15 km from Kaza
  • Chandratal Lake — a crescent-shaped alpine lake at 4,300 metres, best known for Chandratal Lake camping (June–October)
  • Kaza — the main town and best base for two to three nights
  • Kibber, Komic, Hikkim & Langza — high-altitude villages, home to the world's highest post office
  • Chicham Bridge — Asia's highest suspension bridge
  • Tabo Monastery — founded in 996 AD, called the "Ajanta of the Himalayas"
