Best Places to Visit in Meghalaya

Shillong

Shillong is the natural base at the beginning of both Serenade routes. The itinerary starts with pickup at Guwahati Airport or Railway Station, followed by a road transfer to Shillong and a stop at Umiam Lake.

Cherrapunji / Sohra

Cherrapunji is one of the strongest components of Serenade's Meghalaya itinerary. In the Explore Meghalaya route, the journey from Shillong toward Cherrapunji includes Laitlum Canyon, Mawkdok Dympep Viewpoint, Nohkalikai Falls, Garden of Caves and Arwah Caves, with Seven Sisters Falls listed when time permits.

Nongriat & Double Decker Living Root Bridge

The Double Decker Living Root Bridge is one of the most active days in the Serenade itinerary. The route sends travellers to Tyrna village, the trek starting point, before descending toward Nongriat with a local guide.

The route involves a long stair-based descent and return, so this should not be presented as a casual sightseeing walk. Comfortable footwear, hydration and enough time for the return climb are important.

Dawki & Umngot River

Dawki is widely associated with its river scenery and boating, but water clarity is seasonal and depends on rainfall and current conditions. It should never be guaranteed based on promotional photographs.

Mawlynnong

Best Meghalaya Itinerary

Meghalaya 5-Day Itinerary

A five-day Meghalaya plan is possible, but it requires prioritization. A sensible suggested route is Shillong → Cherrapunji → Nongriat or a lighter Cherrapunji sightseeing day → Dawki → return toward Guwahati. Trying to include every waterfall, cave and village can make a five-day itinerary rushed.

Meghalaya 6-Day Itinerary

Serenade's Explore Meghalaya package is the direct six-day match. Its structure gives Shillong and Cherrapunji multiple nights, includes the Nongriat trek and adds a Dawki stay rather than reducing Dawki to a rushed roadside stop.

For travellers who want the core Meghalaya experience, this is the more focused of Serenade's two current group products.

Meghalaya 7-Day Itinerary

Serenade's Meghalaya Adventure with Kaziranga is the direct seven-day option. It retains the Meghalaya circuit while adding one night in Kaziranga and an included Jeep Safari.

This is useful for travellers searching for a Meghalaya 7-day itinerary but wanting more variety than another Meghalaya sightseeing day.

Meghalaya 8-Day Itinerary

Serenade does not currently run an eight-day Meghalaya package. If you have eight days, use the extra time as a buffer, slow down the existing circuit, or request a customized private itinerary rather than assuming an eight-day product exists.

Shillong – Cherrapunji – Dawki Route

The Shillong–Cherrapunji–Dawki itinerary works because each stop has a distinct purpose.

Shillong acts as the gateway and city base. Cherrapunji is the waterfall/cave section and the base for the Nongriat trek. Dawki changes the pace with a river-oriented landscape and provides access to the southeastern side of the circuit.

Serenade's stay pattern—two nights Shillong, two nights Cherrapunji and one night Dawki in the 5N/6D package—shows why it is better to think of Meghalaya as a road circuit rather than a single-base holiday.

Double Decker Living Root Bridge Trek

The Nongriat day deserves special planning. Serenade's itinerary starts the trek from Tyrna village and includes a local guide.

Wear shoes with reliable grip, carry water, start with enough daylight and avoid scheduling another physically demanding activity immediately afterward. If you have knee, mobility or other health concerns, assess the route before booking rather than assuming every Meghalaya sightseeing day is equally easy.

Meghalaya Trip Cost

The clearest way to estimate a Meghalaya trip cost is to start with the actual package and then add anything excluded.

For the 5N/6D package, transport begins at Guwahati, so a traveller coming from Delhi should add their own Delhi–Guwahati return travel unless the final Serenade quotation explicitly includes it.

Also budget for excluded sightseeing entry fees, meals not included, optional boating/adventure activities, shopping and personal expenses. The Kaziranga version includes the Jeep Safari, while Elephant Safari and additional activities are excluded.

Meghalaya Trip from Delhi

A Meghalaya trip from Delhi has two distinct components: getting from Delhi to the Northeast arrival point, and the local Meghalaya circuit.

Serenade's Meghalaya packages begin with pickup at Guwahati Airport or Railway Station at fixed timings and include Guwahati-to-Guwahati ground transport. They do not state that Delhi–Guwahati flights or trains are included.

Meghalaya Trip for Couples

Meghalaya can work well for couples who prefer road trips and nature over resort-style holidays. Shillong evenings, Cherrapunji viewpoints, waterfall stops and the Dawki side of the circuit provide variety, while Nongriat adds a more active shared experience.

The two verified Serenade packages are group trips, not dedicated honeymoon products. The package data does, however, state that private trips can be arranged with choices around stay category, departure location, itinerary and route.

For couples prioritizing privacy, ask for a customized private quotation rather than presenting the group package as a honeymoon package.

Meghalaya Trip With Friends & Group Trips

Serenade runs Meghalaya as a group trip, with group sizes of around 12–16 travellers. Transport is by Tempo Traveller or SUV depending on group size, and a trip coordinator/team representative accompanies the group.

This structure can suit friends who want to avoid managing hotel bookings, intercity transport and daily route planning themselves.

The 5N/6D version is the cleaner Meghalaya-only option. The 6N/7D version is better when the group also wants Kaziranga.

The current Serenade products are group road trips rather than explicitly hostel-based backpacking packages. They may appeal to backpacking-style travellers because of shared transport, group coordination and active sightseeing, but do not claim hostel stays unless a live package specifically includes them.

Best Time to Visit Meghalaya

There is no single best season for every traveller. Your priority—waterfalls, clearer road-trip weather, river conditions or monsoon landscapes—changes the answer.

October–November

This period can suit travellers prioritizing road sightseeing and outdoor exploration after the heaviest monsoon period. Always check current conditions.

December–February

Winter can suit travellers who prefer cooler conditions for road trips and walking. Pack warmer layers for mornings and evenings. River appearance and waterfall volume vary with current conditions.

March–April

These months can work well for general sightseeing and outdoor activities before the core monsoon period. Heat and rainfall patterns can vary year to year.

May–September / Monsoon

Monsoon gives Meghalaya its most rain-associated character and can make waterfalls particularly prominent, but heavy rainfall can also affect visibility, roads, trekking and outdoor plans. Build more flexibility into the itinerary.

A monsoon Meghalaya trip should not be judged only by the promise of bigger waterfalls. Rain can change trail safety, road speeds, visibility and river conditions.
